Translations for financial markets
Supporting you in international financial markets
Since 1996, SMG Languages has provided specialized financial translation services through our expert SMG Finance team, comprising native-speaking translators with many years’ experience in the field and specific expertise in economics and finance.
We provide linguistic support to asset and wealth management companies, investment funds, banks, and other financial intermediaries, including asset management companies (SGRs) and securities brokerage firms (SIMs), as well as all financial market supervisory authorities.
Legal compliance
In an increasingly global market, financial market participants have significant opportunities to expand their businesses by offering financial instruments and services in international markets.
The strict legislation governing access to and operations in these markets must be carefully taken into account, and anyone intending to enter them must comply with the applicable regulations.
Operating in foreign markets requires compliance with specific customer disclosure requirements, including the translation of legally required documents into the official languages of the target countries.
Some examples:
- The PRIIPs KID: a three-page summary document for retail investors that provides essential information about the financial product. It covers the objectives and risks of the investment, basic information about who manages the assets, and details of who to contact with questions or complaints about the product.
- The prospectus: a document subject to less stringent translation requirements (depending on the requirements of each country), containing details about the issuer, the product and the associated risk levels.
- The pre-contractual template: a document containing all pre-contractual information, including questions and answers about the investment arrangements that will apply once the contract is signed and, for companies operating in Europe, the information required to comply with the sustainability requirements set out in the EU SFDR (Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation).
- The periodic report.
- The fund fact sheet.
- Communications to shareholders.
- The initial public offering (IPO).
- The documentation for mergers and acquisitions (M&A).
- Compliance documents.
Our main clients
Translation memories and editing for financial texts
To ensure accurate translations of documents for financial markets, translators must have received prior specific training on regulations such as the SFDR and, more generally, must have comprehensive knowledge of sector-specific terminology in an industry governed by regulations containing prescribed standard wording.
Using these standard syntactic and conceptual formulations is a fundamental requirement for accessing foreign financial markets. It standardizes documentation to facilitate understanding for customers and helps reduce information asymmetry inherent in these markets.
Translation Memories
Another key resource used by SMG Languages for its clients’ financial translations is our extensive collection of translation memories, developed over nearly thirty years in the industry. Using these memories helps prevent errors, particularly where prescribed standard wording can and must be reproduced exactly over time.
Another factor that makes translating texts for financial markets particularly complex is the need to work within predefined templates, which may vary from one country to another. The SMG team is equipped to meet these challenges, and our specialist editors also provide support with the formatting of financial texts.
Maximum security for financial translations
Another crucial aspect of the translation of financial documents is the management of sensitive content.
For this reason, SMG also specializes in translating and managing texts containing information classified as “Confidential”, “Highly Confidential”, “Secret” and “Top Secret” (C, HC, S, TS), or texts subject to NATO classifications or equivalent classifications in other countries.
Secure internal platform
In addition, clients under contract with us can use SMG Desk, our internal platform, to upload their content directly. This prevents files and texts from circulating through systems beyond the company’s control and helps protect against unauthorized access by third parties.
Finally, both our in-house and freelance translators are bound by a non-disclosure agreement and are required to follow our strict internal confidentiality and quality control procedures. Our services are certified to ISO 9001:2015, UNI EN ISO 17100 and ISO 27001 standards.
