When simultaneous interpreting is whispered

SMG Languages provides chuchotage interpreting, a form of simultaneous interpreting in which the interpreter does not use a microphone but whispers the speaker’s words directly to the listener in the target language, in real time as the speaker is talking.

It should be noted that the quality of chuchotage can be lower than that of booth-based simultaneous interpreting, as background noise and the sound of the interpreter’s own voice may make it more difficult to hear the speaker clearly.

How many interpreters are needed?

This solution is recommended only for meetings with a limited number of listeners, as one interpreter can whisper to a maximum of two people. If several interpreters are engaged at the same time to assist other listeners, the resulting noise may disturb the other participants. The cost of using a large number of interpreters may also make traditional simultaneous interpreting with a soundproof booth more practical, allowing one interpreter to serve all participants.

What technology is needed?

This interpreting technique allows the client to receive simultaneous interpreting without setting up a soundproof booth or the specialised systems normally required for traditional simultaneous interpreting, providing significant savings in space, cost and set-up time.
