Conference interpreters

SMG Languages’ consecutive interpreting services are a professional solution for conferences, meetings and negotiations where simultaneous interpreting is not required and the interpreter speaks after the speaker has finished

What is consecutive interpreting?

Consecutive interpreting should not be confused with simultaneous interpreting, in which the interpreter interprets while the speaker is speaking. One significant advantage of consecutive interpreting is that it does not require any specialist equipment, apart from a microphone for the interpreter where necessary. The disadvantage is that the overall speaking time is approximately doubled, as the interpreter’s rendition follows that of the speaker.

How many interpreters are needed?

A single interpreter can provide consecutive interpreting for up to two hours while maintaining a reliable level of quality. Beyond this point, it is highly recommended that a second interpreter be used or that a break be scheduled. At a conference, this can simply be the coffee break.

What technology is needed?

Ensure that a microphone is available so that the interpreter can be heard clearly throughout the room. The interpreter must also be able to hear the speaker clearly and should therefore be positioned at an appropriate distance. For conferences, we recommend seating the interpreter near the speaker, for example on the same stage.

How to order our consecutive interpreting service?

Simply contact our offices and:

  • Tell us the location, date, time, programme of events and language combinations required.
  • Provide information and reference material on the subject matter (speaker’s presentation, etc.) so that the interpreters can prepare thoroughly in advance. Arrange a briefing or telephone call to explain the details of the event to the interpreters, as this can greatly improve the effectiveness of the service.
  • Indicate the approach you would like the interpreter to take: depending on the type of audience and the subject matter of the event, effective communication may require a specific register (calm, friendly, authoritative or relaxed) and a particular on-stage manner, since good communication depends not only on the words used but also on how they are delivered.
