At the National Translation Studies Conference held on 21 October 2010, we highlighted the critical importance of accurate and conscientious patent translation in safeguarding intellectual property and protecting products in international markets. During the event, we also presented innovative solutions developed by companies within our Group, specialising in patent translation and linguistic consultancy in sectors such as mechanical engineering, electronics, chemistry and pharmaceuticals.

Most requested languages for patent translations
We carry out approximately 60% of our patent translations in English, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian and German. The remaining translations predominantly involve Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Czech, Greek and Turkish.
In recent years, we have seen a significant increase in demand for translations into languages such as Arabic, Chinese and Korean. This increase in demand has enabled us to strengthen our team specialising in these languages since 2007.
What Translations Are Needed for My Patent?
We would like to offer some practical guidance on the translations required for patent registration, although we recommend checking any procedural updates with the relevant authorities.
To apply for a European Patent:
Following the examination and validation of your patent by the European Patent Office (EPO), the patent will need to be translated into the languages of the countries in which it is recognised. We recommend checking the applicability of the European Unitary Patent, a project by the European Commission that provides protection across all EU countries by submitting patent applications to the EPO in English, French or German. If the application is made in another language, the EPO will reimburse the translation into one of the three official languages. Once one of the three official languages has been chosen, it must be maintained throughout the life of the patent.
To apply for an International Patent (PCT):
An application must be submitted to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), based in Geneva. Please note that correspondence with WIPO should be conducted in English, German or French.
